    Canon Character Section:
History: Per the legend, Mulan joined the army to replace her father when a draft to arms was called. She falsified a male identity for years and achieved considerable status as a warrior before returning to home. There were laurels.

Rather than retaking her role as a lady of the household, however, she found that her skills as a warrior were still needed. Her own village and numerous others were plagued by a rather ugly fire-breathing creature named the yaoguai. In the course of her hunt, she met a woman named Belle, who proved a reasonable tracker. They joined forces mostly after Mulan was introduced to her limitations via an uncomfortable leg wound, and defeated the yaoguai together. When said beast turned out to be a Prince named Philip, Mulan had learned enough about respecting those that are more than they seemed to want to help him with his comatose girlfriend etcetera. Additionally, she had a bone to pick with Maleficent, and maybe wasn't over her armor-and-helmet phase. Dresses have too much ventilation.

It was then that the curse hit and cut Mulan off from her homeland. She had a brief bout of survivor's guilt then got over it, suspecting that her home was not altogether destroyed.

She and her companion found Aurora, Phillip's girlfriend, only for the wraith to interrupt the happy reunion and put Phillip down instead. Mulan started on an even rockier start to friendship with Aurora, but they sort of bonded over discovering two weirdo trandimensional travelers who were responsible for the wraith's arrival. They identity themselves as Mary Margaret and Emma Swan, which Mulan doesn't care about very much! At the point which Mulan is taken to Teleios, she is in the process of frogmarching them back to base camp.

    Personality:
A decade-plus of military life, mostly in subterfuge, have made Mulan a somewhat humorless and dry woman. She tends to come off rather aloof, brusque, and sometimes even put-upon, especially to civilians or those who have been raised in a different kind of military culture. This is in part because she hasn't gotten over being able to bark orders and people for immediate compliance or, at worst, face tactical discussion; or else take instruction in full faith that they have seniority and experience that she completely understands.

She is honorable to a fault, in that she's unlikely to break a promise-- even a bad one, or when flexibility might be best. If she swore to lock the gate at midnight, the gate is closing at midnight, even if that gate happens to be a beanstalk and two minutes might not hurt since there isn't a giant in sight.

On the flipside, one of the fastest ways to earn points with Mulan as a friend-- or ally, more commonly-- is to demonstrate that same sort of fastidious faith and absolute compliance to oath. Perhaps ironic for a fraud, Mulan values integrity above all things. It does annoy her she had to lie to save her family in her homeland many years ago, which is in part why she tends not to discuss her past. What can she say? The moral high ground is so comfortable. In all seriousness, she isn't impossible to reason with, and has a strong interest in serving the innocent and the greater good whenever possible. It's only when possibilities are limited that she tends to come off as kind of a jerk. Earning points with Mulan as more than a friend doesn't typically seem possible; she is usually thoroughly uninterested in romance. Usually!

The unfamiliar tends to make her rather nervous, and Mulan tends to rely on skills and tactics she has accumulated over her past to survive the new. The best time to introduce her to fresh tools and unusual plans is when she's facing a problem she has not encountered before.

This rather dour and aromantic persona conceals a few hidden aspects of Mulan. Among those, she recognizes that she started assimilating into the military machine and began to lose some of her creativity to the familiarity routines and processes of the life. She left with Phillip as much for honor and charity as because she wanted adventure and to acquaint herself better with herself as she is.

Powers/Abilties: Formerly, Mulan had wielded a sword that clearly possessed unusual properties. To the best of her knowledge, it was the single greatest sword in the land, capable of wreaking exceptional damage in the course of cutting, stabbing, and the usual good sword activities. However, it is also capable of deflecting magical attacks.

Mulan herself has the physical traits of an adult human woman who has undergone harsh physical conditioning for slightly over ten years. She is strong, quick, and has endurance enough to go hand-to-hand with most accomplished warriors of the opposite sex. To that point, she is also a fighter of considerable skill and versatile weaponry herself, including archery, swordsmanship, polearms, and of course, the boleadoras. She has also exhibited proficiency with herbalism and knowledge of spiritual matters salient to her homeland.

Notably, she has little familiarity with firearms, and when she encounters unusual objects and curio, she tends to fool around with them in a way that might blow off her face.

Appearance: Mulan is a 30-year-old woman who looks slightly more youthful than her purported age. She has dark hair and eyes, as well as a slightly darker complexion, something like a perpetual tan. Her face looks rather girlish, really! She has a very athletic build and stands at 5'6". There must be something special going on with the placement of her sweat pores and glands because she is always hauling around in massive armor with minimal leaking.

[The liquor was percolating through her veins. It was a strange sensation indeed; one she'd encountered only rarely before. Most her time at battleground campsites had been spent watching the men become increasingly slovenly and careless, knowing that she could not share their ease without fear of discovery. She opened and closed her eyes. They were heavy. Her face felt even warmer now than it had been after three hours at the fire. Almost feverish, not unwell. She couldn't remember what she'd been worrying about a few minutes ago. Ogres? Bears? No, they'd killed the bear.

The bear was cooking, actually. It smelled wonderful.]

    Phillip.

[Phillip had been staring at the fire for some time. His eyes tended to get very small and faraway when he was thinking about Aurora. It was almost funny how small they got, she realized, but she clenched her jaw against a laugh because that wasn't fair; heartache was a terrible thing to watch and worse, no doubt, for the sufferer.] Phillip. Phillip. Phillip-- [She realized he was already looking at her. His eyes were normal size again.]

After this bear, I need to talk to you about eating more of the berries and mushrooms we harvest. I understand that it's not the taste you're accustomed to, but the diet will change your smell. I don't want to be rude, but after a day of travelling you smell like... eleven.

Mulan looked up when she heard the wind moving louder through the trees, the susurrus of leaves on leaves and bark-skinned fingers interlocking high over their campsite. She frowned and slid her glove along the stone, pushed herself up onto her boots.

She felt heavy, but she'd felt heavier before. It was late. Aurora had been asleep for five hours. The nap she had grabbed earlier, perhaps two hours while Aurora cooked over low flame, had kept her steady for awhile but the time was beginning to wear on her now. It was the best they could for a rotating shift with only the two of them, and Aurora unaccustomed to switching. They would be out of basilisk territory soon, and then she'd be able to sleep.

Mulan sat down near the other woman and peered down into her face. Aurora didn't seem to be dreaming about much of anything, her features smooth and expressionless cupped in the curl of her hand. Mulan was glad of it; she'd seen old soldiers and children alike who'd seen terrible destruction descend on their homes and families. Who'd lost less than a kingdom to a curse and a lover to a wraith, and nevertheless found them slowly sucked down into a bog of nightmares steeped in memory.

Memory was like an illness to some who survived. Mulan had seen it turn laughing champions into wilted husks of themselves. They'd have the same face, the same voice, but were quieter afterward, ghosts who ignored their wives, switched their children for speaking, and slept and woke for nothing but the next call to battle. Or worse, the secretive civilians who spent years after the war hiding from the fields lest they caught fire again, and while the harvest rotted they horded wine and meat that spoiled before famine was ever wont to strike again. Mulan was glad that it was not so for Aurora, who missed Phillip loudly, asked impudent and offensive questions about Phillip, glowered whenever Mulan talked about Phillip, picked up her skirt insisting they cross the river rather than waste time going around, and never ate more than her share.

She pulled the princess' blanket a little higher very carefully, and then returned her hand to the hilt of her sword.
